When you don%26#039;t have NY insurance on a registered vehicle, the state DMV sends out daily fines. If I insure the car out of state and terminate the NY insurance, how long do I have to turn the plates in. Is there a way to %26quot;get out%26quot; of the fines?
What is the grace-period for returning license tags/plates into New York state DMV?
First off, you CAN%26#039;T have out-of-state insurance on a NYS registered vehicle, that would be committing Insurance Fraud.
As for the license plates, if you don%26#039;t have insurance on your NYS registered vehicle, as soon as you receive the notice that your registration has been suspended, you are required to remit your license plates to DMV immediately. To not do this subjects you to either a summons or arrest + confiscation of your license plates and the towing of your vehicle.
The only way to %26quot;get out%26quot; of the fines is to prove that you had insurance from NY from another company during the time frame that the other insurance was expired/lapsed etc.
