Looking for free software to use to convert index cards to text with keyword tags?

I have hundreds of index cards with ideas for a textbook. Each card contains maybe 3-10 lines of text. Each card also has a number of keywords, (as the text may be relevant in many different chapters). So an example might be %26quot;Offer your colleague a hug%26quot;, the keywords might be %26quot;physical%26quot;, %26quot;kinesthetic%26quot;, %26quot;sexual%26quot;.

What I need is some software where I can input all the text and it%26#039;s associated keywords and then perform search by keyword to bring up the relevant cards. I know this could be done in Excel, but it would be messy and I%26#039;d rather use some free software already designed for this purpose. Any suggestions? Many thanks!

Probably any decent database program will do it. You really don%26#039;t need to worry about indexing the key words because a good search routine should be able to read every record for the words you need. Databases usually have data and text fields. Data fielda are the easiest to search but they have a limit of 255 characters. Text fields can often contain whole pages of text, but they require a special search routine. I haven%26#039;t been involved in databases for years, but a program like Filemaker will definately do the job. it%26#039;s not free. Unless someone here comes up with a specific name, try a search on http://www.download.com Enter database as your search pattern. They have millions of shareware programs and a lot are free. If you%26#039;re doing it on the Internet, there are dozens of scripts at http://www.hotscripts.com Ypu could scan each card and use an optical character reader OCR program that comes with the scanner to save a lot of typing. Hope I%26#039;ve helped a little.
