What can I do?I sold my car,and the buyer never turned my tags in?

I sold my car, and I was nice enough to trust the buyer, to borrow my tags, to drive the car to his home. Now I recieve a letter from the MVA(Maryland Vehicle Admin), saying my car has no insurance, and that I have to pay a fine, and that is because when I sold the car, I asked the buyer if he turned the tags in, and he sd yes, so I cancelled my insurance. What can i do?

In most states, you have to send a release of liability form to DMV, showing that you no longer own the vehicle. That along with the bill of sale would have kept you out of trouble........

Most DMVs require the seller to submit a form stating they sold the car, when, and to whom. This puts the onus on the buyer to register the car.

Reply:Make a police report right away. Send the police report to your insurance company. Go to the DMV with the police report and ask what you have to do to make sure you don%26#039;t get in trouble if the tag is used in a crime or something.
Reply:The buyer failed to transfer title, now you have to prove that you do not own the car, when it was sold, and your whereabouts during a certain timeframe. This is exactly what happens when you fail to file a Seller%26#039;s Notification of Sale, or Seller%26#039;s Report of Sale. At this point, you need to contact the DMV and try to file one now, at least from this point forward, you will have some protection, you must have the buyer%26#039;s info to complete the form. When engaged in a business transaction, that%26#039;s exactly how you must behave. This is going to be an expensive lesson to learn, but hopefully you won%26#039;t let this situation happen again.
