I think this is a stupid question, but I am going to law school to become a lawyer and I have a traffic ticket that was classified as a misdemeanor of the second degree. My temporary tag on a new vehicle was a few days expired because the DMV sent my license plates to the wrong address. I don%26#039;t think this should interfere with passing my background check to become a lawyer do you?
Can you become a laywer if you have received a misdemeanor of the second degree for expired temporary tags?
You would have to report it, but since it is not a felony, not a crime of moral turpitude, or domestic violence; I doubt it would raise a concern with the Bar Association.
Reply:I would say Yes. You can still be a lawyer. Why should that stop you?
That would be something if the answer was No.
The Clintons are lawyers. Obviously you can lie, cheat and steal and be the prime suspect of a murder and still be a lawyer ( and co-President)
Whats a few traffic violations?
Reply:If all lawyers had to have clean records do you think there would be so many of them? They are more numerous than illegal immigrants and most of them seem scummy so I%26#039;m guessing that a misdemeanor, especially something as minor as that would do very little to stop you from reaching your goal. Background checks are for drug related charges and violence/ felonies. Minor things like that are not a big deal.
Reply:Yes. You can become a laywer. As long as you haven%26#039;t commited a felony you should be ok. It just might be hard to find a good firm willing to accept you with that 2nd degree misdemeanor......you know. Even if it wasn%26#039;t really your fault.
Reply:I think you%26#039;ll be fine. Just answer everything honestly and openly, and don%26#039;t attempt to hide anything.
Reply:if ask give a full disclosure then it shouldn%26#039;t hurt you there are some cases where people had to wait for awile to pass the bar but those are for more srious crimes
Reply:yes ofcourse...but I feel this question is best answered by your law school administration.
You were required to tell this on your application to the school...if they accepted you its because they think you have good enough character to take the bar...if you did not report it you better come clean quick....the bar hates people who hide facts such as this.
