Can I renew my liscense plate tags with out insurance?

I know I did last year, and I live in illinois. I don't drive the car but a cop pulled up today and told me I need to still have it registered. Can I renew the tag without insurance?

Not in California.
Reply:Park it out of the street and you won't have to register it. Texas requires proof of current insurance to renew. Don't know about IL.
Reply:Have it registered as a non-operative vehicle. In some states, they do allow that. I would check the website for the Department of Motor Vehicles where you live to see if you can.
Reply:I don't think so. I know in the state of Virginia you have to have proof of insurance to renew tags/. Just went through all that myself.
Reply:No it's illeagel not to have insurace on a car that is being driven.
Reply:No.
Reply:absolutely not and should not even consider having it on the road with no insurance

you may be able to renew it but its highly illegal to operate it
Reply:some states just make you sign a statement that you have insurance coverage.

ps- its called perjury
Reply:If you're renewing by mail then you may get away with it.
Reply:nope, nada, not gonna happen
Reply:No, and why would you even consider that. Either sell the car if you're not driving it, put it in storage or get insured. It's called personal responsibility and abiding by the law. Jeeeez. peace
Reply:you cant in Kentucky, so i dont imagine you'd be able to anywhere else
