Can i get tags if i cosigned for my car i live in maryland?

i cosigned for my car my dad signed owner because i only had my learners and 17 at the time.Now i have my license i want the car he wants to take the tags off.My name is on the title and registration and insurance what should i do plus i put $8,000 down on the car from saving bonds i recieved

It sounds like the vehicle was financed. If that's the case in most states you won't be able to take either cosigner off until the loan is paid in full or you refinance in your name only. Check with www.dmv.com to find out your state's requirements for titling the vehicle and you can be sure.

Or convince him to leave the tags there.
Reply:OK, I don't think this is the right word. A "cosigner" is someone who guarantees a loan. I can't imagine you at 17, are guaranteeing the loan for your dad.





So maybe HE cosigned for the car. If your name is the ONLY name on the title and registration and insurance, then YOU get to pick what to do with it. But, you ALSO have to pay the insurance to keep it legal.





OTOH, he's your dad. If he's providing the roof over your head, and he's got responsibility for what you do with your car while you live there, I bet there's a way for him to take that car off hte road - even if it's only in your name.
